Game Club Trophy Banquet and more
© By Othmar Vohringer
My wife and I attended the annual Game & Trophy Banquet yesterday. This is an annual event put on by the Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club. It’s an event that we look forward to every year. The purpose of the event is to have a good time with fellow hunters and anglers, eating lots of different wild game dishes lovingly prepared by the members and it’s also an opportunity to recognize members that have made special time and labour contributions to the many conservation and hunter recruitment programs of the club. Of course such an event would not be complete without hunters and anglers having their trophies evaluated, measured and rewarded too.

On February 18, my friend Bill Otway was officially inducted into the Canadian Anglers Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the Ontario Fishing & Boat Show. Patrick Walsh, Editor of the Outdoor Canada Magazine, had the honour of presenting the induction to Dan Otway, who accepted the distinction on behalf of his late father Bill Otway.

Knight Muzzleloaders Are Back
© By Othmar Vohringer
For me it was a sad day on June 01, 2009 when I had to report that Knight Rifles closed the door as another victim of the economic downturn. I guess with guns it’s the same as with the first real love. My first in-line muzzleloader was a Knight Wolverine and I fell in love with it. Since then Knight has always been my favourite muzzleloader and every other brand I owned was compared to it.
With that said I am understandably thrilled to tell you today that Knight Muzzleloader is back in business. Last week the new line-up of guns was launched on the new website.
The new muzzleloader lineup includes the Mountaineer, Disc Extreme, Bighorn, TK 2000 (a in-line turkey muzzleloader shotgun) and the Long Range. Just from looking at the new rifles – I have yet to hold one in my hands – I am partial to the Mountaineer and the Bighorn muzzleloader because the two models remind me of my trusted Wolverine. Of course technology has advanced sine then.

Bloomberg Calls For Kitchen Knife Control Law
© By Othmar Vohringer
I am sure we all have at times joked “what about a knife control law?” when we heard or read gun control advocates reasoning for the need of such laws. Well it's no joke anymore. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg demanded a knife control law.
In a statement following the murderous rampage of Maksim Gelman, a 23-year-old Ukrainian immigrant, killing four victims with an with a 8-inch kitchen knife the New York Major released the following comment:

British Columbia Grizzly Bear Management Plan – NOT
The following has been submitted by Wilf Pfleiderer,
BC Wildlife Federation Wildlife Committee Chair on behalf of the BC Wildlife Federation membership.
Once again First-Nations and some Anti-Hunting “outdoor exclusionists” are back at it again trying to erode away our hunting opportunity. If you want our Grizzly Bear population to be managed on science, rather than emotional, social arguments that will be detrimental to the bears you need to act now!

BC Wildlife Federation Brief
Coastal Grizzly Bear Hunting
The BC Wildlife Federation wishes to express their grave concerns regarding the Coastal Grizzly Bear Hunting proposals developed through Government to Government treaty negotiations. Should the proposals be adopted by the provincial government it will set many new precedence’s for wildlife management in BC. It will exceed the recognized constitutional rights for First Nations involvement in wildlife management. More importantly it will reduce defensible science base management of wildlife to socially based management which in turn is not defensible, and will lead to the erosion of resident hunting opportunity throughout the province.
