It has been a while since we did a “News Roundup” here at Outdoors With Othmar Vohringer. In other words, it about time for one. Staying informed is very important for hunters and anglers, especially about news of new pending legislation.
Without further ado here is the latest news in the outdoor world.
It is with great regret that a missing hunter in Calgary hunter has been found dead. According to the authorities who examined the dead hunter it is very likely that he had been attacked and killed by a grizzly bear. It seems that each year we of more hunters, anglers and hikers are attacked by bears. This means only one thing, despite the claims of animal rights, bear populations grow an nowhere more so than in Canada. For the full story go to the Calgary Herald. In New Jersey a hiker was attacked and killed by a black bear.
Talking about bears. In NW Wyoming the wildlife service has increased the limit on taking grizzly bears for the next three years in a323-square-mile public land grazing complex east of Jackson. In that area hunters can now take three female grizzly bears.
Alligator hunting is on my “must do list” for several years now and so it is no surprise that I read up on alligator hunting news. In the Mississippi Sportsman News I read that the record on trophy gators has been broken twice inside two weeks. The first reptile, a 756-pound 16 ft. beast, was caught by Robert Mahaffey of Brandon. His record was short lived when Brian Montgomery caught a monster gator weighing in at 792-pounds. Both alligators where taken on public waters near Vicksburg.
When I lived in Illinois the state was known as the nation’s deer hot spot number one, hunters from far and wide would travel to Illinois in anticipation of taking a trophy buck. Large deer populations and good genetics made it possible to hunt on public land with good expectations to get a nice buck. However, over the years things changed for the worse. Some blame the decline of the deer population on bad wildlife management and others on the outbreak of CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease)
This lead to the founding of the Illinois Whitetail Alliance, an organization committed to bring the Illinois deer herd back to its former glory. To do so the Illinois Whitetail Alliance borrowed a conservation tactic that helped the duck population to regain their large numbers, it’s called “Voluntary Restraint”. Read here more how the program works.

Saying goodbye…
© By Othmar Vohringer
…Is never easy. This is no different with a company, especially if that company manufactured and sold a product that had a good purpose and made hunting from treestands with a rifle safer. It came a bit of a shock to me when I learned that Gun Safety Innovations had to close its doors as another victim of the current economic situation. There have been rumors for a while that the company is considering calling it a day but somehow I hoped they would pull through.
I first became aware of Gun Safety Innovations around the middle of June in 2006 when I was surfing the Internet, as I often do, looking for hunting news. I somehow ended up on the Gun Safety Innovation blog Hunt Smart, Think Safety written by Kristine Shreve, Marketing Director of the company. After reading about the product called “Gunslinger” and later renamed to the much catchier and descriptive name “GunTriever” I knew that this was a winner of a product. You can read all about the GunTriever in my product review that I wrote after I field-tested the product.
Shortly after my review Gun Safety Innovation became one of my sponsors and I became one of their pro-staff members. I like to work with companies that manufacture useful quality products because it is such products that I can fully endorse and promote with confidence and still be able to look in the mirror at the end of the day. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It always has been my policy that I only promote products that I am convinced about. The GunTriever had been one of these products and I was sure that it would become a hot seller. But it seems with the economy faltering gun safety in a treestand seemed not to be first and foremost on the minds of rifle hunters.
Besides helping to promote the GunTriever I had the privilege to gain Kristine Shreve as a valued friend and supporter of my blogs and work. From a business point of view I learned a lot about promotion and marketing from Kristine. It was this friendship that ultimately led, together with a handful of other serious outdoor bloggers, to the founding of the Outdoor Blogger Summit (OBS). I think I speak for all founding members here if I say that it is in large part thanks to Kristine’s drive, determination and vision that the OBS today is the largest outdoor blogger organization.
I am sad to see Gun Safety Innovations closing but the friendships I made thanks to the company are continuing. Of course as the hopeless optimist that I am I have not given up hope that one day Gun Safety Innovations will be back again.
Thanks for everything! I wish all the employees and owners of Gun Safety Innovations nothing but the best of luck in the future.

Kristine Shreve, Marketing Director of Gun Safety Innovations had the following to say about the logo change on her Hunt Smart Think Safety blog.
“Ladies and Gentlemen there was jubilation and joy (and perhaps a little happy dance to two) in the GSI offices yesterday afternoon. We have finally settled on a logo design.Personally I welcome both the change of the product name and the logo for an excellent product that will enhance the safety of firearm hunting from a treestand.
We decided to dispense with trying to do something that solely featured the GunTriever and instead based the new logo around our slogan: Hunt Smart, Think Safety. We are still toying with just having GunTriever rather than Git-A-GunTriever at the bottom of the logo, and I think that is the way we will eventually go. We may also use versions of the logo without the circle of color behind them. The nice thing about this logo is that it is simple and versatile and we can do a lot of things with it.”

Gun Safety Innovations Renames Premiere Product
© By Othmar Vohringer
Today Kristine, Marketing Director of Gun Safety Innovations LLC, emailed me the following press release.
Regular visitors to this blog may have read that I mentioned several times a new and very neat product called Gunslinger (read my review of the product here). The Gunslinger has been renamed to GunTriever. The reasons for this are outlined in the following press release. Although the name has changed the product is still the same and using it will not only safe you priced rifle from damage should it fall from your treestand, it also could safe you or others from serious injury or even death.

Wildlife Images by Artemis Graphics and Design
Many readers enjoyed the wildlife images I posted in my last article Oh Deer A Bear Arthur from the Simply Outdoors Blog suggested that I should link the images to larger pictures so readers could appreciate better the quality of wildlife images my wife takes.
The pictures I use on this blog are all hosted by Photobucket where I used to post large size images and then let blogger downsize them for my blog. However, I was never happy with the crappy quality of the downsize job blogger did. So I upload the images on photopucket in the exact size I want them for my articles here on my blog.
To accommodate the wishes of my readers my wife came up with a simple solution. “Othmar why don’t you provide a link to my wildlife gallery on DeviantArt every time you post one of my pictures on your blog. What a brilliant idea and why didn’t I think of that myself?!
So here is the link to the Artemis Graphic and Design wildlife gallery. If you are not in a rush you may just as well have a look at all the other galleries available, including her art gallery. There are only something like 1000 images and graphic art pieces. Oh, before I forget. The gallery is called 12monthsOFwinter, it’s all long story behind that name, but you’re on the right place. Enjoy!

Gunslinger Extender Allows Hunting from Higher Elevations
Once the hunting rifle is safely in the stand, the Gunslinger Extender and the Safe Retrieve Tether are detached and hunting proceeds normally. The Extender simply increases the height of the stand from which a gun can be raised and lowered.
Regardless of the height of the stand, and whether or not the Extender is used, the Gunslinger will still ensure that a hunting rifle which is dropped from a tree stand will fall barrel down, eliminating the risk of injury due to accidental discharge.
The Gunslinger can be purchased now by visiting www.git-a gunslinger.com. The Gunslinger Extender will be available on the same web site in early September. Gun Safety Innovations, LLC, based in beautiful Northern Michigan, designs and manufacturers safety products for hunters. Our products are designed and field-tested by hunters to ensure that every hunt is a safe hunt.

Heirloom Custom Turkey Calls Update
Knowing Brian Warner, a tireless searcher for improvements and new materials to create new and better turkey calls, I was not surprised to learn that he has come up with new calls. Heirloom’s newest call additions to their extensive line up are: The Wafer Call which is a slim-line glass friction call that easily fits in your shirt pocket but don’t be fooled by the small size. This call has the customarily big sound volume common to all Heirloom Calls. As reported in an earlier article about Heirloom calls, Brian’s secret to achieving sound volume is in the sound chamber. What he does with the sound chamber is Brian’s closely guarded secret that he shares with nobody, including his dedicated pro-staff members.
All the slate style friction calls are now delivered with two strikers, a wooden and carbon striker. Now that right there is customer service not offered by other call makers. The carbon striker is what makes a turkey call waterproof on rainy and misty days, which are often the best times to hunt turkeys. Also a newer call in the lineup is the “Pass it On” wooden box friction call. And then there is still Brian Warner’s unique service of customized calls. These calls make beautiful presents for a friend, family member, or to honor a very special turkey trophy. Simply choose a picture of a special person or feather of a trophy turkey and send it to Brian and he will work it into the surface of the call. This service only works with glass calls.
Avid pro turkey hunter Dr. Zane Cofield who has been fortunate enough to field-test some of the Heirloom Calls expresses how well Heirloom Custom Turkey Calls worked for him. “I am winding down this turkey season having hunted Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and my home State, New York. I cannot stress enough the advantage of having professionally made calls; production calls are a dime a dozen and with the calling and hunting pressure we have today, especially on public lands, a good custom-made call or two can make a world of difference.”
As a proud Heirloom pro staff member of the first hour, I am extremely happy about our success. I am confidently looking forward to the future of Heirloom Custom Turkey Calls- a company that I can represent without any reservations. It has become rare in these hard, business driven times to find a company like Heirloom which still believes strongly in providing hunters with a quality product that will last forever, or to quote Dr. Coefield: “For men like me, there is a certain inner pleasure of catching forty pound salmon on a 90-year-old bamboo rod, fly-fishing for mahi-mahi off the coast of Bimini using a two-pound tippet, and calling in wily old turkeys with a call that is not only woods-worthy, but is also a piece of true art, made by a true artisan of the forest.”

Artemis Graphics & Design is a multi talented photographer, painter and graphic designer. Her styles span a wide variety of art styles form the surreal to the traditional as can bee seen by the picture above and the painting below of a tiger done in pencil.
