Blog Buzz

© By Othmar Vohringer

It’s been ages since I did a “Blog Buzz”. It seems of late I just can’t find the time in my hectic schedule to cruse around the Internet and visit other blogs to highlight here. A few weeks ago Kristine from Outdoor Bloggers Summit, of which I am a founding member, issued a writing challenge to the OBS member bloggers. The challenge is titled “How To get Everybody Outdoors” in which other bloggers are asked to write about how to get kids, and adults, away from the computer, TV and other housebound activities and into the outdoors.

The response was phenomenal. Eleven outdoor bloggers took the challenge and came up with what I consider to be some of the best reading I have seen in the blogging world for a long time. Here is a list of all the blogs with links to the articles. I urge you all to take the time and read the articles.

I did not take part in this challenge because I wrote a guest blog “Youth Outdoor Participation Declines” on the OBS that covered that very topic. In fact it may have been my article that gave Kristine the idea to issue this very important challenge.

Our biggest challenge for the future is to get kids back outdoors, not only to secure the future of hunting and fishing but for the general well-being of our children and nature. If future generations loose all connections with the great outdoors and understanding of how nature works how will they be able to learn how important this planet is to all living things, including humans?

Blog Buzz – What’s percolating in the outdoor blogger world?

© Othmar Vohringer

As the hunting season winds down outdoor bloggers tend to write about other issues pertaining to the outdoors and in this edition of the Blog Buzz I start off with an issue that is close to my heart. Quality trophy pictures, ro the lack thereof. When I visit other websites I am at times disgusted with how little care some hunters take when they photograph their trophy animal. Deer are covered in blood, or are displayed right next to a gut pile or exposed to the viewer with the slit open belly. I often think what other people might think when they see a picture like that. Thanks to Adam from Foggy Bottom Outdoors and his brilliant article, Tips for taking quality deer pictures, hunters will now be able to take pictures that portray their hard earned trophy in a esthetically pleasing manner and thus increase the fond memories of the hunt. A picture can say a thousand words about the hunter and hunting. Lets make it thousand positive words.

There is a new kid on the outdoor blogger block. Deer Passion (no relation to my blog Whitetail Deer Passion) is written by a “small town girl from Kansas” (Hurray another female outdoor blogger). According to the profile the author loves to fish and hunt and is passionate about conservation too. On the Deer Passion blog these passions are highlighted in a well formulated manner. If you haven’t seen that blog I encourage you to read it.

Talking about newcomers to the outdoor blogsphere, let me introduce you to the Wild Side Blog. Some of you may remember Chad from my product review of Field Dress and their top quality t-shirts printed with beautiful wildlife, fishing and hunting motives of such stunning beauty of which I have never seen before in my long life. Now you get to know Chad personally on his blog where he talks about outdoor issues and lets you have a glance into his persona and the company he so proudly and successfully leads.

At the Outdoor Bloggers Summit
Kristine has worked tirelessly many hours to establish a detailed list of every member and supporter and then added each one to the state and Canadian province they belong. This list is an invaluable tool for regional OBS chapter organizers when they start to organize and host regional OBS events. If you’re interested in the local OBS events or would like to become a chapter organizer – we still need lots of them -let Kristine know. While I am at it, let me give a big cheer and heartfelt thank you to Kristine, like I said, she works very hard on behalf of the OBS and yet she never complains does not get paid and always pushes ahead. She is a woman on a mission for the benefit of all outdoor bloggers. Kristine you Rock! I know this does not say a lot but I simply have no other words to describe the deep gratitude I feel toward Kristine and her unwavering commitment to the OBS.

On the Black Bear Blog Tom Remington posted a story from down under (Australia) of an elderly couple whose sleep was interrupted by lowlifes attempting to ransack the couple’s garden shed. If you ever in a similar position and need the police to attend quickly you should follow the procedure outlined in When you need help fast with a burglary . It’s an amusing story with a sad underlining. Sad, because it shows how reluctant the police is to assist law abiding people but on the other hand act light lightening if they suspect that a criminal comes to harm. Read it and you know what I mean with that.

At Whitetail Deer Passion I started the second Deer Contest. There have so many entries after the first contest closed that I just couldn’t disappoint all the ones that didn’t make in the first one. If you want to enter the contest and become eligible to win a DVD double set of Whitetail Revolution provided by the good folks at Versus Country then enter now. Closing time for the contest is at the end of this month and when this one is over, it is over.

There are, as always, many blogs I would like to write about, but neither have the space nor time to squeeze them all into one post. Check out the blog roll and every other blogs link list and you will realize what a wealth and diversity of information outdoor bloggers provide for everyone. Isn’t it great! You bet it is!!

Blog Buzz

© By Othmar Vohringer

It has been a long time, to long, since I published a Blog Buzz. Usually I highlight some articles from fellow outdoor bloggers that I found very interesting in this series. But since it has been a really long time since the last Blog Buzz I am going to change a bit toady’s contribution.

Over the months I have added a few new blogs on my blogroll. The list keeps getting longer and longer and with that the chance that some might be missed in the heap. So here are the new blogs and I think each and every one of them is outstanding in its own way.

Deer Hunting Big Bucks

As you can gather from the blog title Adam is, like me, passionate about whitetail deer hunting. In his profile he wrote: “I have great respect for the whitetail. I think the whitetail deer is the most beautiful animal on the face of the earth.”

Adam shares with us many hunting stories, hunting tips, product reviews, news and information about trophy whitetails. This blog is a must read for all whitetail deer enthusiasts.

Jr. Deer Camp Blog

We all know and love Rex from the Deer Camp Blog. Now meet Erin, Rex’s daughter is every bit as funny as here father. Besides making fun of her father she tells us about the family gatherings at the famous Christmas Plantations and how family and friends mean to her. Very nice blog, we need more teenagers writing about hunting.

Low Country Hunting

Jeff is a professional photographer and operates together with his wife the Low Country Hunting Service, based in South Carolina near the Savannah River in Hampton County. On his blog he writes about the success stories of Low Country Hunting Service plus lot of tips on hunting and quality deer management. Reading through Jeff’s “about page to gather information for this blog buzz I found out that we have something in common. Jeff is not a big fan of sport but he does like professional rodeo. That right there is my kind of guy.

The Liberty Pines Ranch Breaks

This blog is written by Wayne Schmeling from Minnesota lives for the outdoors. This quote from his profile will give you a good indicator what his blog is all about.

“I started by living the dream season of fall through numerous hunting and fishing trips, and then set out to settle a score with some unfinished business. In January, 2008, I began my latest expedition pursuing the completion of a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Creative and Professional Writing and a Bachelors of Science degree in History at Bemidji State University.”

NorCal Cazadora

Holly A. Heyser is a professional journalist and professor of journalism (if I got that right). Over the few weeks that I know of that blog it has become one of my favorite to read. With journalistic vigor Holly snoops out the full scoop on stories in the news about hunting. With charm and wit but always factual she takes on the animal rights and proves them the hypocrites they are.

A novice hunter that only a few years ago joined our great heritage she reports about her hunting adventures in the duck marshes and turkey fields with an enthusiasm that is truly contagious.

Fish Geek

Why Fish Geek? Why not! A person so involved in fishing and love for it that he now studies hard to get a Masters degree in Fisheries Biology at Utah State University is a Fish Geek and I do mean this in the most respective manner.
What ever you want to know about fishing you’re sure to find it on this blog.

Flyfishing Fool

From the Geek to the Flyfishing Fool. Zach tells us in his intro to his very well written blog:
I am a trout bum, mountain bum, river rat, live out of my truck, typical college student trying to afford a tank of gas and a six pack of beer. I have more time than money so I figured why not start blogging. Enjoy life, recreate, get out there and do something.

Don’t be fooled by this modest introduction. Zach’s blog is full of knowledge, tips and info for the avid and beginning flyfisher. Throughout the blog you also can see some stunning photography.

Blog Buzz #8

© By Othmar Vohringer

Today’s blog buzz is unusual because rather than posting random outdoor blogs whose recent articles have inspired or awed me. I have decided to post about blogs that have recently posted dedicated articles to encourage outdoorsman and women across North America to stand up and take action in the defense of our outdoor heritage.

As I wrote in Get active in the protection of our rights column. Our heritage faces many challenges and all of them have to do with the elimination of hunting and fishing in the long term. How important it is to stand up shall be highlighted by this blog buzz.

Kristine posted an outstanding article Speak Up and Speak Out. She writes that my column was the inspiration but that is not why I recommend it here. Kristine writes how important it is to overcome the little difference we have and concentrate on the big picture of how we can defend our rights as a united front. Kristine has realized how important it is to “speak up and speak out” with the following quote.
“I guess the lesson here is that there is always something each of us can do to further the pro hunting, fishing and conservation agenda. I know I’m going to make more of an effort to be alert for opportunities. I hope all of you will as well.”
Phillip from the Hog Blog has been a front runner in alerting hunters to the looming led shot ban in California and despite posting about this issue several times (you can read all articles here) he feels at times that he is a lone voice in an ocean. At times Phillip seems a bit frustrated at the fact that hunters seem to take this bureaucratic nonsense with nothing more than shrugging shoulders. This problem will not go away by lamenting about it in the bar or in the hunting camp, action from every hunter is needed or the anti crowd and government bureaucrats will book another victory at our cost.

Yesterday I posted a news item about the Michigan DNR and how they struggle to protect bowhunters rights in the township of Clinton (see post below this one). Unbeknown to me, Arthur from the Simply Outdoors.net posted about the same issue here. What looked like good news at first has now turned ugly. The downship of Clinton is not about to take the DNR ruling sitting down. Since the ruling states that the township can’t outlaw bowhunting on private land the township turned against the DNR and spitefully outlawed bowhunting “as a criminal act” in Clinton township parks. The anti bowhunting stance is fueled by animal rights and anti hunters. It seems that there is not much input from the hunters on this important subject. Small wonder then that the township is in the erroneous believes that the antis are the majority. Perhaps it is time for Michigan hunters to show the Clinton township council that hunters are a huge majority and give the DNR fighting for your right to hunt some much needed support. Here is another interesting post Arthur wrote that you should read. He writes about how he has seen the light about standing up and getting active.

This brings me to Albert Rasch from the superbly written blog The Rash Outdoor Chronicles. He too has realized hoe important it is to stand up in defense of our hunting heritage in the extremely well written article Contacting Those Good-For-Nothing Curs. After stating that he is not very keen on writing about political issues on his blog Albert writes why he makes an exception and concludes with the following statement.
“…everyone else that is formed against us is very well organized. Outdoorsmen aren’t. I would like to think that we are in the mold of Daniel Boone, Capts. Lewis and Clark, General Lee, Teddy Roosevelt, Patton, all the rugged individualists that made this nation great. But this is a situation that requires a concerted and continuous effort; an effort where only the most tireless and dedicated can hope to win, where friends and associates can make the difference. I therefore resolved to do my part to assist.”
It seems that everyday more outdoor bloggers come to the realization that we ALL need to stand up and speak out about what is right and in defense of our right to hunt and fish. Lets hope that the thousands of readers that visit our blogs eventually will also come to the realization that we are a huge majority that for some unexplainable reason has chosen to be trampled on by a dwindling minority. The message is clear. If we do not speak up our adversaries will successfully continue with their blasphemous and lying ways until they have removed our rights and freedoms. Think this is not possible? It happened in England where hunting is only possible on the private grounds of stately homes.

Blog Buzz #7

© By Othmar Vohringer

Time for another of my popular blog buzz editions. This has been very likely one of the most difficult picks I ever had to make, over the past two weeks the outdoor blog sphere was literally buzzing with note worthy articles.

I’ll start of with a new blog that I came across about a week or so ago. The NYbowhunter features a superb article on how to improve your trophy picture taking. This is a must read for everybody looking to take better pictures of their game kills and fish you land.

Steve Remington from Skinny Moose Media asks Are You Drying Up On Ideas and then quickly follows with an array of solutions on finding new ideas and topics to write about on your blog.

My blogging friend Bryan from the DeerPhD blog has a series of articles going under “Buck Fever that are sure to improve your hunting ability and success. He writes as both, an accomplished hunter and psychologist. Brilliant stuff!

Darrell from the Alpha Trilogy Blog gives us a wonderful day by day account of his Colorado Elk Hunt. Go to the bottom of the article where you will find the links to his other elk hunting journal entries.

Blog Buzz # 6

About Lady Hunters and Fishers

This edition of the Blog Buzz is dedicated to the many women that enter the outdoor bloggers fold. I am an avid supporter of different hunting groups such as women hunters among others. For too long the women were left out of our great hunting heritage. I still can fondly remember that my mother often would join my father on hunting trips. I also can remember that my mother was a bit of a novelty in the male dominated hunting camps. Luckily this has changed drastically over the last ten years or so.

Women not only have joined the hunting camps but also the fishing camps and they blog about it too. It is said, and I believe it, that woman are more sensible and thus often better hunters than the men are. It seems, gathering from reading their blog, that women also see the experience of hunting and fishing with somewhat different eyes than we do. Perhaps their experience could be best described as more wholesome. As we all know, nothing escapes a woman’s eye and that seems to hold true in hunting and fishing too. Women don’t seem to overlook that little flower blossoming on the wayside or the how the light reflects off the water - all the little things that make nature so intricately beautiful.

I am proud to see so many female outdoor bloggers and the fact that five of them are on my blogroll. Speaking of blogrolls: I have added a special group to the bloggroll called “Lady Hunters & Fishers” and here they are, enjoy:

Timber Life

The Wild Woods Woman

Hunt Smart Think Safety

Marian's Hunting Stories

Fishing Fiesta

Artemis Graphics & Design

The last link is not a blog. It is the website of my wife. She is not a hunter in the normal sense. Her weapon of choice is the camera with which she captures the beauty of nature and animals in stunning landscapes and wildlife pictures. As I have learned, photographers approach their quarry very much the same way as hunters do. In order to get the right shot a lot of scouting has to be done. So it is not that different from hunting – other than the choice of ‘weapon’!

Blog Buzz # 5

In today’s Blog Buzz I am going to ignore some of my own rules. Rather than highlighting specific articles of a particular blog I am going to introduce to you blogs that caught my attention lately with several good articles. Another rule I am going to ignore is that some of the blogs introduced today are not specific about hunting and fishing. Why I divert from that rule you will find out as you read on.

The first blog in this edition of Blog Buzz is the Skinny Moose Media blog by Steve Remington. Here you will find good articles on how to become a better blogger and eventually even make money from it.
These are the articles I regard as recommended reading for every serious blogger.
Blogging in the Hunting Niche
Blogs Are Roads; Intersections and
Further Your Career From Blogging.

A new blog in the outdoor blogger world is Western Wanderer by John Martin. John is a bow hunter and competitive archer from Petaluma, California. He a professional Animal Nutritionist, this is closely related to my professional background as animal Behaviorist. If John is not busy working with animals or hunting all over North America he can be found touring throughout California, performing cowboy poetry. John’s diversity of interests and pursuits are reflected in his blgg entries.

HumpsNhorns by Norm Sargent. This blog is all about rodeo. Norm is from the east coast and has been raised around horses. After high school he moved out west and became a pro-rodeo rider. On his blog he tells us about his interesting career plus gives his readers some insight to the exiting sport of rodeo and his way of life.

Why do you include a rodeo blog in the Blog Buzzer? Good question! Perhaps now is as good a time as any to tell you a little secret about me. Since I have been a little boy growing up in Switzerland I wanted to become a rodeo rider. Instead I became a 3rd generation Swiss Master Butcher and later went on to become an Animal Behaviorist. But Rodeo always has had a big place in my heart. The closest I ever came to riding a bull, my life long dream, was to sit on a mechanical bull in a cowboy bar. All my life I have been a cowboy. Hence why my friends call me “Swiss Cowboy”. So there you have the reason why I includedHumpsNhorns in this edition of Blog Buzzer.

My last tow choices of blog brings us back to hunting. AlphaTrilogy is a newer blog. Darrell is my kind of guy, he hunts to pursue his passion and not to brag about big antlers. He is totally consumed by the great hunting heritage and that comes out clearly in his blog articles.

And finally, if you like upland bird hunting as much as I do, then you just have to bookmark the Upland Feathers blog. This blog offers a large catalog of articles about upland bird hunting, conservation and everything else in between, as long it has to do with upland bird hunting. Great Blog.

Blog Buzz #4

It’s about time I compiled another Blog Buzz. I have been very busy lately with little time to spare and visit other blogs. I am still very busy but thought, “what the heck let’s visit my fellow outdoor bloggers, before they think I am ignorant or died and went to heaven.”

There are so many good hunting and fishing blogs that it gets harder and harder to choose which posts I shall add to the blog buzz. So here in no particular order are some of the posts of my fellow bloggers that caught my eye today.

Hunting Sense Blog

Hunting the Perfect Draw Weight?
I’m sure all archery hunters have found out what happens when we try to set the draw weight of our bow to a poundage greater than what we are able to draw back comfortably. I know I have. It was quite a surprise to me when after sitting in a stand for hours in the cold, a buck came in and I tried to draw my bow only to find I had to struggle with it. Needless to say, my macho ego of having a heavier draw weight cost me a nice buck that day, and taught me a valuable lesson…Read more>

Tejon Hunt Wrap-up
Two weekends in a row, hunting the paradise called “Tejon Ranch” has left me a little sore, but a lot satisfied. There aren’t enough ways to describe this place that will ever do it justice. Blog Buzz #3

We have a long weekend here in British Columbia, and every year without fail, it is a cold rainy weekend. Weather like this does not animate me in the least bit to even leave the house. So I thought that would be a perfect time to cruise the Internet visiting the blogs on my blogroll to gather up some new material for my Blog Buzz Edition # 3.

Here is what I came up with for this edition, information and stories of fellow bloggers and outdoors enthusiast that I think are worth a special mention here.

Hunt Smart Think Safety

Safety Friday

Last week I mentioned that I was planning to add a new feature to this blog. This week marks the beginning of Safety Fridays. Since my company is dedicated to helping hunters be safer when they hunt, it seemed only natural that we do one post a week that is dedicated entirely to hunting, fishing or outdoors safety tips and hints…Read more>

Baiting deer and the mixed feeling among hunter.

Here in North Carolina hunting deer over bait is legal and practiced amongst many. However, visit any local blog or forum and you’ll soon realize that the feelings that come with discussing hunting over bait is very diverse even in a state where it is legal. You are bound to read a hundred different reasons why some approve as well as a hundred or so from the ones against it. Seems Mississippi is in the same boat…Read more>

Jeff’s Outdoor Notebook

To Mother

Last year, I wrote a tribute to my original outdoor mentor, my Dad, for Father's Day.
So it's only fitting I give my mother equal time for Mother's Day, even though she didn't have as much to do with my development as a sportsmen.

Actually my mother figures into one of my earliest outdoor memories, one of my earliest memories period, in fact. I clearly recall one time when I was no older than two, we were on a family vacation on a lake in Maine…Read more>

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

We all love to bitch and complain. It isn’t often that we run into someone who rarely, if ever, speaks unkind words. But let’s face it, we all have a certain amount of complaining to do and that includes second guessing. Why do we complain? Mostly because we are dissatisfied. And why are we dissatisfied? Various reasons I would assume.
Let’s examine the whining, complaining, moaning, groaning and even lawsuits in Pennsylvania over whitetail deer management. Are there too many deer? Are there not enough deer? Are the deer stripping the forests of vegetation? Does the Pennsylvania Game Commission know what they’re doing? Should they all be fired? Do the politicians have a clue? How much of a role, if any, should politics play in managing whitetail deer or any other wild creature for that matter? …Read more>

The Fledgling Fly Fisher

Fly Fish Fanatics Five Fabulous Flies

I figured that it was about time to start listing some of my favorite/deadly flies to use for Trout in the lakes of western North America. These are flies that I will not leave home without when going to any of the lakes in western Canada and the western parts of the USA.
Flies are a man made representation of the food that these fish eat. The types of food varies from region to region and from lake to lake depending on many factors. Trout will target different insects depending on what type of insect is hatching at the lake at the time you are fishing.
These hatches can change in timing depending on many factors, some of these are…Read more>

The Blog Buzz #1 Edition

The Blog Buzz is a new addition to this blog. Let me explain what it is. Ever so often I come up with an instantaneous idea that hits me like a hammer. There are many good outdoor related blogs on the Internet providing superb information on all aspects of hunting and fishing and that gave me the idea to create the Blog Buzz. Periodically I will post about other outdoor blogs with a link and a short description of the article that I found to be of interest to a wider reader base.

Here is the first edition of Blog Buzz.
