Bear Attacks Man In Outhouse

© By Othmar Vohringer

A 65-year-old man and his friend, a 63-year-old man, from Winnipeg experienced a dramatic encounter while on a fishing and camping trip at Dunbar Lake, north of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, when a black bear attacked the older man and dragged him out of an outhouse on early Saturday morning.

According to the Police report the 65-year old man was in the outhouse and was startled by this bear. "The bear reached in and grabbed him by the arm and dragged him out and proceeded to bite him and slash at him. The victim suffered a bite in the back of his head and several scratches on his head, neck and arms.

The man's 63-year old friend heard the commotion and came to the rescue by shooting and killing the bear. The police report states; "His fishing partner that was up there with him heard the screaming and the shouting … and he got his gun that he had with him and dispatched the bear." The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at hospital in Sioux Lookout and released.

This man was lucky that his friend was nearby and was able to kill the bear with his gun. As bear numbers increase across Canada this is a good reminder that people should always have some form of bear protection within reach when they venture out into nature and not only when they go into remoter wilderness areas.
