Jon Bryan from the Outdoor Odyssey blog sent me an email to alert me to the efforts of the OSHA to bring about gun control through the backdoor by proposing new regulations that would control the ammunition. It is proposed to classify primers and powder as explosives. The proposal includes, among other things:1. Prohibit possession of firearms in commercial “facilities containing explosives”—an obvious problem for your local gun store.
2. Prohibit delivery drivers from leaving explosives unattended—which would make it impossible for delivery services such as UPS to deliver ammunition or gun powder.
3. Require evacuation of all “facilities containing explosives”—even your local Wal-Mart—during any electrical storm.
4. Prohibit smoking within 50 feet of “facilities containing explosive”- which would include the outside the front door of any gun store, even if you just passed by the store.

The NRA, as to be expected, is after this proposed regulation with full force and so are other organizations like the US Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).
Other than that, there does not seem to be a lot of protest about this proposed legislation that would severely impact the rights and freedoms of hunters, sport shooters and other law abiding firearm owners. I wonder. Where are all those thousands of angry protesters, that only a few short months ago ended the career of Jim Zumbo (read my article here). Over night Jim Zumbo’s 40+ year career, as one of the most respected hunting, firearm ownership and Second Amendment promoters (read his open letter to the U.S. Senate here) has been ended by a personal opinion he shared on his Outdoor Life blog. He lost all of his sponsors and was kicked out of the NRA too, and all because of the pressure from angry gun owners in reaction to that comment.
What Jim Zumbo wrote was nothing more than a personal opinion on a particular type of firearm. That comment in no way would have even remotely impacted American firearm owners rights. On the other hand what the OSHA plans is a very real threat to American’s rights to own and bear firearms. It is the beginning of gun control, as we know it in Canada and some European countries. Now we need these angry voices, just as loud and upset, to stand up and voice their opinion and be counted. Contact the OSHA today and let them know what you think. Support the NRA, the NSSF and the USSA in their efforts to put a stop to this bureaucratic assault on law abiding American citizen’s constitutional rights and freedoms.

Kristine has provided me with the latest update on this case. OSHA has extended the comment hearing on this bill until September 10, 2007.
Jon has the same happy suspicion as I do. If they (OSHA) extended the hearing period from July 1st 2007, to 10th September, 2007 perhaps somebody is putting the pressure on them. I like to think that this is a flood of comments they got from angry hunters and firearm owners.

If you haven't seen it yet, the extended the comment period on this bill until September 10, 2007. So we have more time to muster the troops and raise a ruckus in protest.
Thanks for the update on the comment date Kristine. I sure hope that hunters and firearm owners will take the time and effort to post their opinion to the OSHA. Unlike the comment made by Jim Zumbo, this issue really matters.

If they have postponed the end of comments until Sept., sounds like someone is putting some serious pressure on them.
