Grizzly Bear Attacks Man

A Yellowstone National Park employee who was attacked by a grizzly Sunday said the bear "came out of nowhere" and flew at him, a Park Service official said Monday.

Ken Meyer, the park's safety officer, said he eventually got off three shots and believed one of them hit the bear, according to Al Nash, a Yellowstone spokesman who spoke with Meyer by telephone Monday.

The attack happened just north of the park, near Gardiner.

Meyer suffered injuries to his back, left leg, stomach and both forearms, Nash said.

I can't imagine being attacked like that. I guess even the 'pros' are vulnerable. I hope everyone who ventures into these woods is aware of this risk and prepares accordingly.

Neither can I, yet it is possibility we have learned to live with around here where you can see bears roaming around in the middle of houses. Lucky for us we only have to deal with black bears which do not have such a notorious character as the much more aggressive grizzly bears.

I am a bit puzzled about this attack since I would like to think that National Park Staff is armed and trained for such events. Here in BC even loggers carry rifles or a sidearm as bear defense. Hikers, although permitted to carry guns provided they have the proper gun licensing, mostly carry pepper spray or bear alert bells. Fortunately bear attacks are very rarely heard of here, considering how many bears we have, but still it is something that is on our minds each time we go outdoors.
