A little of this and a little of that – a mixed bag of news

© By Othmar Vohringer

Yesterday I looked at this blog and realized my last post had been written in the first week of February and now we’re almost in the last week of the month. I have been extremely busy with several projects and totally forgot that I wanted to take part in Kristine’s Non-Traditional Faces of the Outdoors Challenge. The challenge was in response to an article in the American Spectator written by Christopher Orlet, titled The Hunt of Gray February. I am not going into the details here of what the article is all about. If you want to read it click on the link. But be warned it may make you as angry and upset as it did everybody else who read it. Suffice to say the article starts by insulting women hunters as unwanted intruders in a male dominated sport and then goes on to insulting male hunters too and from there it just goes downhill into the gutters.

The article caused an outrage among the hunting community, ultimately leading to the challenge of the Outdoor Bloggers Summit to the members to write about the true spirit of the hunting community. Many fine bloggers took the challenge up with some absolutely terrific responses, providing testament of the real outdoor community spirit. You can read the posts here. All I can say to the responses is that I am proud to be part of this community and well done to each and every writer who took part in this challenge.

I am sure many of my regular readers remember the controversy surrounding the World Hunting Association in 2006. I wrote my first of many posts about the WHA on June 1st. of 2006. For those of you that have forgotten or do not know what it was about let me rehash. The WHA was the brainchild of a real-estate agent, by the name of David Famerman, who wanted to turn hunting into something like the bass fishing tournaments combined with reality TV show. The idea was to send hunters (competitors) on a contest where the winner would be decided by who shot the biggest deer in the contest.

The reason why I took issue with this type of entertainment is because I believe that hunting never should be reduced to a mere spectators sport. But I was equally disgusted with the fact that the deer would not be killed and provide food. Instead the idea was to replace the deadly bullets and arrows with darts and tranquilize the animals. I have a big problem with that too because I believe that there is no justification whatsoever to drug wild animals unless it is for medical or research reasons, but most certainly not for sport and fun. To me the whole thing had absolutly nothing to do with hunting. It was just plain harassing of wildlife without a shred of dignety just for entrainment and money.

At the time it seemed that many real hunters and hunting organizations thought along the same lines, resulting in a flood of opposing articles and letters to sponsors of the WHA. To make a long story short. The sponsors eventually pulled out one by one and without money to go ahead with that ludicrous idea of harassing game animals for fun the WHA went into oblivion where they came from and where they belonged.

By now you may be asking why I dig up the past and I gladly will provide the answer. Yesterday I visited Jake’s Outdoors and read to my surprise that from what I gather to be a similar attempt is been made again. In his article Real Hunting, Jake writes about a hunting show he has seen on television where hunters chase wildlife with tranquilizer guns. Jake notes that instead of calling that type of hunting, and I use this term very loosely here, “catch and release” it’s now referred to as “green hunt” but in essence, Jake says, it is exactly the same as what the WHA tried to do in 2006.

I keep referring to Jake because I have not seen the show and when I tried to find out more information there wasn’t much. But you bet I will keep a close eye on that one and get ready to fire the first shoots, no pun intended, as soon as I hear more about this nonsense. In the meantime if any of you have more information on this topic I would appreciate if you could pass it on to me.

This leaves me just with enough time and space to update you briefly on a few things that happen here at the home front of Othmar Vohringer Outdoors.

I am pleased to inform you that I am now a regular contributor to Great Canadian Sportsman and their various magazines, Great Canadian Sportsman, Canadian Bowhunting and Canadian Deer Hunting. My debut article, “Choosing the right treestand for the perfect ambush” has been published in the new edition of Canadian Bowhunting.

Great Canadian Sportsman is unique in regard that it is a web based line of hunting magazines but made up like a real magazine, perhaps that is the future of all outdoor magazines. Ones you log in for free you can chose the magazine you would like to read and then “flip” the pages with the mouse. I like that format and I am impressed with the quality of the layout and editorial content the magazine provides to a variety of hunting and fishing interests.

Have you ever sat down and pondered for hours and days how you could swat two flies with one swipe only to realize later that the solution has been right there in front of you all the time? Well it happened to me a few months ago. Let me explain. Here in British Columbia turkey hunting is becoming fast very popular. With that popularity the hunter’s need for turkey hunting knowledge rises equally. Somehow, someone spread the word that I hunt turkeys quit successfully for many years and ever sine then there isn’t a day going by without the phone ringing or emails in my inbox from someone asking for advice.

This in turn gave me the idea to combine several of my turkey hunting seminars into one four-hour turkey hunting course. It's basically still a seminar but because of the length of it I call it course. At around the same time I was thinking about how I possible could raise more awareness and funds for our local Fish & Game Club of which I am a board member. I tossed a few ideas back and forth but nothing seemed to stick to the walls. Then a few days later, I am sitting on my computer writing the script for the turkey hunting course, it hit me like a lightening bolt out of the blue sky. Offer the course through the Fish and Game Clubs. I approached our club and they where all for the idea. The date for the course was set to March 15, and would you know, the course has totally sold out to the last seat within a few days.

Meanwhile, other Fish and Game Clubs heard about it and jumped at the chance too and before I knew it I was busy juggling dates and ended up with a seminar tour across the province of British Columbia. Many people, including hunters and fishers, have no clue just how much these organizations locally do to improve our environment, wildlife habitat and make sure that future generation can go hunting and fishing. Besides volunteers these clubs need money and that is why I came up with the idea to use the turkey hunting course as a fundraiser for these clubs. By providing hunters with much needed turkey hunting knowledge and offering the course exclusively through clubs as a fundraiser I managed to swat two flies with one swipe. I love it when things fall into place like this.

My wife wins heritage award

© Othmar Vohringer

It had been quite an exiting week in our household. It started with me been accepted as a member of Outdoor Writers of Canada and that was quickly followed by more great news concerning my wife.

Heidi takes part in the Merritt art exhibition and for that she supplied several art pieces plus a few photographs. On opening day of the exhibition my sister-in-law came to visit us and we went to the exhibition so my wife could show her which items she had submitted. That evening we drove back for the official opening and no sooner had we stepped into the building the manager approached my wife and said, “The picture you submitted for the local heritage section” has won first price.

The newspaper lady and the judges, among them the Mayor of Merritt, where waiting to congratulate my wife and have a picture taken with the lucky winner for the local newspapers. But that is not all. When we visited the galley earlier with my sister-in-law, Opie, a famous Canadian Native sculpturer and painter, purchased Heidi’s “Spirit of Heida”. He said, “This is an amazing piece of art, representing our Native culture.” That's quite a compliment coming from a Native person, considering that my wife in not of Native heritage and culture.

I always knew that Heidi is a great artist. It fascinates me how she can see something beautiful in everything and then reproduced it in a painting, a drawing or capture it with her camera. I know that this must sound presumptuous coming from her husband, but I know that she is one of the best and she works very hard at what she is doing so well. It thrills me to no end that her art finally has gained the recognition it deserves so richly. I couldn’t help but wipe a tear of joy away as I hugged my wife and congratulated her to the award. “Well done Honey, I love you with all my heart and always had faith in your exceptional artistic talents, even when you couldn’t see it at times.”

You can see the winning picture and read my wife’s version of the event on her blog and her large photo gallery can be viewed here and the art galley here.

Heidi is a freelance photographer and a graphic designer and can be contacted at: artemislangley@shaw.ca
Graphic art and photgraphy prints are available at Artemis Graphics and Design

Outdoor Writers of Canada

© By Othmar Vohringer

A few weeks ago Peter Wood, author of Ripple Outdoors and Corporate Director of the Outdoor Writers of Canada, sent me an email. In the email Peter paid me a huge and for me humbling compliment by stating that he has read my blogs and thinks they are excellent. Then Peter asked, “Why are you not a member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC)?” I answered back, thanking him for his kind words and compliment and that I looked into joining the OWC a while back but don’t think that I measure up the professional standards after reading the requirements needed.

To cut a long story short the next email I received was signed by OWC Executive Director and Canadian outdoor celebrity T.J. Schwanky. The email stated that he received word from Peter and after looking at my blogs the OWC would be happy to have me as a member and that I would find attached to the e-mail a membership form.

I filled the membership form out but to complete the application process I had to find, as required by the regulations, a “membership sponsor”. The sponsor had to be an active member in good standing with the OWC. I asked Bill Otway, an award winning outdoor writer and conservationist who, like me, is also a member of the Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club, if he would be so kind to sponsor me.

To be honest, at the time I was not sure if he would sponsor me, because compared to Canadian outdoor celebrities like Perer Wood, T.J. Schawnky and Bill Otway among many others, I am a blank sheet of paper. Bill looked at me and said, “Of course I will sponsor you my friend. You deserve to be a member of the OWC.” With that he signed the form and wrote a nice comment with it as well. I sent the membership form and membership dues off five days ago and on Thursday I received an e-mail confirmation – letter confirmation and membership card will follow with regular mail - that I have been accepted as member of the OWC.

For me this is a proud moment in my outdoor life. The membership and assistance from all the other members will help me to become a better writer and provides me with another outlet to promote the conservation of our rich outdoor heritage to even more people.

Fish Cops & Game Wardens – A must read for every campfire story lover

© Othmar Vohringer

Bill Otway, multiple award winning outdoor writer and conservationist has just realeased his new book, Fish Cops & Game Wardens. The book provides a unique look and insight into the lives of the dedicated men and women who protect our wildlife resources.

Their work is not always easy and sometimes downright difficult, occasionally even dangerous. It requires impeccable judgment, insight and quick wit. Yet the men and women who embrace the task do so with an ironclad sense of duty and honor. However, there’s also a hilarious, unusual, often compassionate side to their work.

Fish Cops & Game Wardens tells in 72 stories from game wardens, conservation officers and fisheries officers Bill has met and befriended in half a century of involvement in the domain of wildlife and fisheries conservation efforts. The stories in the book are humorous, others make the reader think and still other stories are so hilarious they make you laugh. Whatever the story may be, humorous, thrilling or compassionate, they are all real live experiences and the stuff campfire stories are made of that will be told and retold for generations to come.

Fish Cops & Game Wardens is the ideal book for every hunter and fishers who loves tales and stories. And who dosen't love a good story? When I began reading this book I couldn’t put it down again until I read the last page. Bill’s book is filled with humor, some sadness and the rich history of conservation officers when they were often the only law ensuring the survival of our rich wildlife resources we all share today. The people who read Fish Cops & Game Wardens agree that this book is what they have been waiting for.

So what are you waiting for?

The book is available through my website. To read more reviews and more information about the book and, or to purchase Fish Cops & Game Wardens visit the Othmar Vohringer Outdoors Store.

Blog Buzz – What’s percolating in the outdoor blogger world?

© Othmar Vohringer

As the hunting season winds down outdoor bloggers tend to write about other issues pertaining to the outdoors and in this edition of the Blog Buzz I start off with an issue that is close to my heart. Quality trophy pictures, ro the lack thereof. When I visit other websites I am at times disgusted with how little care some hunters take when they photograph their trophy animal. Deer are covered in blood, or are displayed right next to a gut pile or exposed to the viewer with the slit open belly. I often think what other people might think when they see a picture like that. Thanks to Adam from Foggy Bottom Outdoors and his brilliant article, Tips for taking quality deer pictures, hunters will now be able to take pictures that portray their hard earned trophy in a esthetically pleasing manner and thus increase the fond memories of the hunt. A picture can say a thousand words about the hunter and hunting. Lets make it thousand positive words.

There is a new kid on the outdoor blogger block. Deer Passion (no relation to my blog Whitetail Deer Passion) is written by a “small town girl from Kansas” (Hurray another female outdoor blogger). According to the profile the author loves to fish and hunt and is passionate about conservation too. On the Deer Passion blog these passions are highlighted in a well formulated manner. If you haven’t seen that blog I encourage you to read it.

Talking about newcomers to the outdoor blogsphere, let me introduce you to the Wild Side Blog. Some of you may remember Chad from my product review of Field Dress and their top quality t-shirts printed with beautiful wildlife, fishing and hunting motives of such stunning beauty of which I have never seen before in my long life. Now you get to know Chad personally on his blog where he talks about outdoor issues and lets you have a glance into his persona and the company he so proudly and successfully leads.

At the Outdoor Bloggers Summit
Kristine has worked tirelessly many hours to establish a detailed list of every member and supporter and then added each one to the state and Canadian province they belong. This list is an invaluable tool for regional OBS chapter organizers when they start to organize and host regional OBS events. If you’re interested in the local OBS events or would like to become a chapter organizer – we still need lots of them -let Kristine know. While I am at it, let me give a big cheer and heartfelt thank you to Kristine, like I said, she works very hard on behalf of the OBS and yet she never complains does not get paid and always pushes ahead. She is a woman on a mission for the benefit of all outdoor bloggers. Kristine you Rock! I know this does not say a lot but I simply have no other words to describe the deep gratitude I feel toward Kristine and her unwavering commitment to the OBS.

On the Black Bear Blog Tom Remington posted a story from down under (Australia) of an elderly couple whose sleep was interrupted by lowlifes attempting to ransack the couple’s garden shed. If you ever in a similar position and need the police to attend quickly you should follow the procedure outlined in When you need help fast with a burglary . It’s an amusing story with a sad underlining. Sad, because it shows how reluctant the police is to assist law abiding people but on the other hand act light lightening if they suspect that a criminal comes to harm. Read it and you know what I mean with that.

At Whitetail Deer Passion I started the second Deer Contest. There have so many entries after the first contest closed that I just couldn’t disappoint all the ones that didn’t make in the first one. If you want to enter the contest and become eligible to win a DVD double set of Whitetail Revolution provided by the good folks at Versus Country then enter now. Closing time for the contest is at the end of this month and when this one is over, it is over.

There are, as always, many blogs I would like to write about, but neither have the space nor time to squeeze them all into one post. Check out the blog roll and every other blogs link list and you will realize what a wealth and diversity of information outdoor bloggers provide for everyone. Isn’t it great! You bet it is!!
