Christmas Gifts For Hunters And Anglers

© By Othmar Vohringer

Christmas is just around the corner and as every year I offer you my list of presents for the avid hunter.

I start the list with three books that will be much appreciated reading during the long cold winter days.

Fish Cops & game Wardens
By Bill Otway

Fish Cops & Game Wardens tells first hand account stories of game wardens, conservation officers and fisheries officers that Bill has met and befriended in half a century of involvement in the domain of wildlife and fisheries conservation efforts. The stories in the book are humorous, others make the reader think and still other stories are so hilarious they make you laugh. Whatever the story may be, humorous, thrilling or compassionate, they are all real live experiences and the stuff campfire stories are made of that will be told and retold for generations to come.

Bear Hunting Book and Video
By Justin Ott

The book and accompanying video covers everything a beginning bear hunter needs to know and I am convinced that even advanced and veteran bear hunters will be able to pick a few things up they have never known or need to be reminded of. In 13 chapters the book covers information about the black bear and conservation and then moves on to important things like where and how to find bears. In other chapters different hunting tactics are knowledgably explained. There are sections on hunting bears with rifles and archery equipment. Hunting bears from the ground, over bait, from treestands and stalking bears is all covered in subsequent chapters.

Inside The Wild
By L.W. Oakley

Inside The Wild is a detailed account of L.W. Oakley’s life as a hunter and nature enthusiast among a close-knit circle of hunting friends whose adventures into the wild world of northern Ontario have shaped his beliefs and opinions of what hunting and nature means to him.

I have read the book from the first to the last page and often found it hard to put it down. Oakley is a great storyteller while passing along some valuable insights for us to consider without sounding preachy. I particularly enjoyed how Oakley starts each chapter with a personal story he experienced with his hunting friends. Some of these stories make you think while others make you smile or even laugh.

Apparel:

Dress In Style

How about some beautifully designed T-Shirts for your favourite hunter or huntress?

When I go out in town I like to spread the message that I am a hunter and angler, and that I am proud of it. However, I never wear camouflage clothing in town or even around the neighbourhood. There are other ways, much more stylish, to let people know that I hunt.

T-Shirts with nice hunting and fishing motives are one of my favourites. It is difficult for me at times to find something that suits my style and is non-offensive to people that do not hunt. Obviously I wouldn’t wear anything that says something like “Buck Killer” printed on the shirt. My choice of hunting “advertisement” is exactly what the Texas based company Field Dress offers to hunters and fishers.

ASAT Camouflage designed to fool deer not hunters

Stan and Jim, the designers of ASAT, believed that a lot of camo available at the time had been designed like fishing lures - to catch the hunter rather than help catch the quarry. They knew that just because a pattern looks good in a store or in a small isolated field situation, it doesn't mean that it will work well under all conditions and at all times of the year. What Stan and Jim ultimately decided to do was develop a camo pattern that would be good at all times, in any environment, to fool any game animal or bird. It was a tall order, but the pair felt that they had succeeded with ASAT. Obviously, many hunters felt and still feel, the very same way.

As an animal behaviourist I did my own research on camouflage patterns and found ASAT to be the only one designed to fool animal vision. Consequently. ASAT is my choice of camouflage for the last 16 years. I wear ASAT on all my hunts in any terrain and in any season.

Products:

Magnet Gun Caddy

The Magnet Gun Caddy is one of these rare “Wow” moment products that make you think, “Why hasn’t somebody thought earlier of that.” As with most of these exceptional products the genius lays in the sheer simplicity of the design that fulfills a real need. I lost count of how many times I came back to the truck from a hunting or fishing trip with both hands full of gear. I would have to lean the rifle, gun or fishing rod against the truck to free one hand up to get the key out of my pocket and unlock the truck.

More times than I care to remember the firearm or rod slipped and fell to the ground scratching the paint on the truck in the course of it. With the Magnet Gun Caddy this will never happen again.

Heirloom Custom Game Calls

Anybody that hunts for a year or tow has learned one important lesson when it comes to calling game animals into shooting range. The more realistic you create the illusion of real live animal sounds the more likely it is that you will get a positive response.

Brian Warner, founder and operator of Heirloom Game Calls, is not only an avid hunter but also an excellent woodcraftsman with solid knowledge of natural animal sounds. Combining his talents he is able to create the most realistic sounding game calls available on the market. Each call is personally hand tuned by Brian before it leaves his shop. Just good is not good enough for Brian it has to be perfect. This same quality control extends to his woodworking skills. Each call is beautifully handcrafted to exact tolerances. Heirloom Calls are just that; Heirlooms that will handed down from generation to generation.

Final Approach Eliminator Cargo Blind

I’ll admit it. When I hunt I like comfort. Especially when I hunt ducks and geese, which involves hours of sitting motionless in often wet and cold weather conditions. One aspect of hunting waterfowl that I never liked much is sitting in cold, wet, dug-out blinds.

With that in mind I looked forward to field-testing the new Final Approach Eliminator Cargo Blind. When the package arrived the first thing that surprised me was the relatively small size of an object large enough to comfortably accommodate a grown person. At the same time I was worried that I would have to do a lot of assembly work.

The Final Approach Eliminator Cargo Blind is without a doubt in my mind the most practical, comfortable and useful goose hunting blind I have ever had the pleasure of using and field-testing.

New Boat

© By Othmar Vohringer

My wife got me a present because I am a good boy.

Yesterday I drove to the boat and ATV dealer to pick up the boat. It's only two minutes from our house.

When I came home with the boat one of the neighbors remarked, "It's not a fishing boat. I thought you're getting a fishing boat." I replied, "Yes it is a fishing boat, in the summer. In the winter it's a duck hunting boat."

I always liked Jon Boats because they are so versatile. In my opinion it's the perfect boat for the multi tasking outdoor person.

The Lowe L1436 is 14' long seats 3 people and loads 645 lb. The motor a Suzuki 10 horsepower four stroke will be delivered in a week or two. 10-horse power is all we can use on the lakes around here and is plenty power to push the boat.

Now all I have to do is to build a removable fishing platform on the bow with a swivel seat on a column and two comfortable seats at the stern end. In the winter the boat will be turned into a duck hunting blind featuring a full camouflage tent and a heater to keep me warm. My good neighbor, not the mouthy one, is welded the frame for that as I write this.

It is my second Jon Boat and I am as happy as can be. Oh, did I mention that I love my wife very much. First a rifle and now this boat.

The ideal fishing rod for children

© By Othmar Vohringer

Finally the cold winds and snow retreat from the approaching spring. The days get longer and the first flowers poke through the still cold earth, soaking up all the sun they can get. Spring is also the time to take the children out to the lakes and rivers and introduce them to fishing.

The other day I came across what I would regard the ideal fishing rod for children and novice fishers if ever I saw one. The Rocket-Fishing-Rod is a accurate fish catching tool that can cast out to 30 yards and a action toy all rolled into one. This rod is sure to put for many children, and adults, the fun back into fishing. Isn’t fun supposed to be a big part of getting novices interested in fishing? Sure it is!

How does it work? The Rocket-Fishing-Rod comes completely assembled with line and reel. The baited hook is safely placed into a capsule –No more worries that your youngster or novice fisher hooks his ears or nose- that opens upon impact on the water releasing the baited hook / lure and serves as bobber.

To cast the line the launcher has to be charged, similar to a pump action shotgun. To make sure the launcher doesn’t go off before it should there is a safety switch to prevent premature firing. A hidden compartment serves as storage space for hooks, lead weights and lures.

The Rocket-Fishing-Rod is sold for about US$ 40.00 and comes with extra bobber, hooks and a Learn to Fish DVD plus Roland Martin fishing tips booklet and free tackle pack.

Product Review

Here at Outdoors with Othmar Vohringer I wrote a review “ Unique Fishing Lures” of the Canadian Bottle Cap Lure Company in June of 2006.

To my deepest regret I had to learn that this company might be not all that sincere when it comes to doing business with customers. A week ago I received an e-mail from a gentlemen (name withheld by me). He tells me that he ordered and paid for 200 Bottle Cap lures in August of 2006. To this date he has not received any delivery of the products or refund of the money.

In several email exchanges with the Bottle Lure Company, some of which he sent to me, the gentlemen got nothing but lame excuses why they can’t send the lures. When asked to refund the money the company wrote back that they would like to do that but can’t because only the boss can sign the check. However the boss of the company never seems to be in the office or even in Canada.

I personally wrote an email to the Bottle Cap Lure Company asking for an explanation of the situation. That was a week ago, time enough to respond to my quest. It seems that the Bottle Lure Company is not interested in explaining what are serious allegations from a customer. This behavior really makes me wonder about the business ethics of the Bottle Lure Company.

I came to the conclusion that the writer of the email seems to have a valued point and warning to all that order lures from the Bottle Cap Lure Company when he writes: Norm (Norm Price owner of Bottle Lure Company) is dishonest doesn’t deliver. He takes your money and runs.

I have therefore decided to pull the Bottle Lure Company review immediately and post this warning to all my readers. If you or someone you know has had a similar experience with the Bottle Cap Lure Company, please do not hesitate and let me know.

I would like to state that the Bottle Cap Lure Company has never been a sponsor of “Outdoors with Othmar Vohringer” as has been assumed by some readers of this blog. From time to time I write product reviews from companies that are not my sponsors. Only companies listed with a small banner in the right hand panel under the category “Sponsors of O.W.O.V.” are approved sponsors.

About a fly tying demonstration and new connections

The regular readers of Outdoors with Othmar Vohringer may remember my article about Western Canada's largest Hunting Show. I anticipated writing a review of the show, but then a chain of events happened on that show that is far more interesting to report about it.

My wife, an avid photographer, accompanied me to the outdoor show to hunt for photographic subjects. As we meandered trough the various exhibits my wife spotted a fly tying demonstration by no other than Phil Rowley noted Canadian writer, fly fishing authority and pro staff member of Superfly. Never having seen a fly tier in action my wife was immediately fascinated by the subject, both from a photographic point of view and as an art form. She asked Phil Rowley if she could take some close-up pictures as he worked on his demonstration of tying a weighted mayfly pattern. Phil graciously gave his permission and then the gentleman he is patiently held positions when my wife had to get the camera lens very close to the subject to get a macro shot of Phil’s work.

To get good results in photography it is necessary to take many pictures from different angles and with different camera settings. While standing a bit on the sidelines I admired the friendly patience of Phil while having a camera “shoved in his face” and enjoyed the fact that my wife, a non-hunter and fisher, obviously has a great time. It made me a very happy man to see my wife full of joy as Phil gave her the fly he just tied as a present before we left his boot.

The next day I searched the intenet for more information about fly tying and fishing. It was then that I came across the name Rick Passek from The Fledgling Flyfisher. He posted a review of the Show on his outstanding Flyfishing blog. Rick’s profile states that he is from British Columbia, like myself, and so I just had to write him an email stating that I visited the same show. Rick kindly replayed to my email, saying that he not only visited the show the same day my wife and I did but actually visited the same boot at the very same time my wife photographed Phil Rowley’s fry tying craft presentation. But that is not all, Rick lives in a neighboring town to my home town, talk about coincidences.

Rick Passek offers fly-fishing classes and guided trips for trout, salmon and sturgeon fishing. In addition he just finished writing his first book on tactics and tips for the beginning fly fisher with the title “Fledgling Flyfisher” due out in mid March.
